Christchurch Harbour Water Quality
PLEASE DO NOT SHARE OUTSIDE OF THE CLUB
There has been recent concern in the press and on social media about water quality in Christchurch Harbour. Some E-coli readings taken upstream in the feeder rivers in August are high and unacceptable, but it is important to understand what the data does—and does not—show about the harbour itself.
We have created this video to help understand the huge amount of information out there...it is purely our interpretation and is for club members only - please do not share this outside of the club.
HSC is not advising anyone whether they should take part in water activities or enter the harbour water. That decision is for each individual to make once they have considered the facts as we currently understand them.
Please watch the video in full in the link above. It explains what is being measured, where readings are taken, how river data may relate to the harbour, what the figures show for local beaches, and how this area compares with some others in the UK. We recognise that this is a national problem.
A key point is that river water makes up only a small proportion of the harbour volume which is flushed with sea water every day. High E. coli readings in an upstream river do not automatically mean the whole harbour is at the same level.
We encourage everyone who uses the harbour to watch the video, consider the evidence, and draw their own conclusions about whether they choose to take part in water activities.
We will continue to share further information as it becomes available as HSC is actively involved with the key people who are raising public awareness of our local waterways and pushing for a harbour protection plan.
Currently we have no plans on cancelling or changing any water activities at HSC.
